Modern Music from Deep Appalachian Roots
Growing up just down the road from Doc Watson, Liam Purcell leads Cane Mill Road as they rock the traditional bluegrass standards they were raised on, yet boldly perform original music with roots in the fertile grounds of bluegrass, old-time, and Americana.
Named “Momentum Band of the Year” by IBMA when they hit the scene in 2019, Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road have since been recognized as one of the fastest rising bands in the industry. In 2022, Purcell turned heads by sweeping the Rockygrass Instrumental Championships on Guitar, Mandolin, and Banjo, becoming the first person in history to do so. Since then you may have also seen him with his band on national TV with PBS appearances on David Holt’s “State of Music,” and Woodsongs Old-Time Radio Hour. Other performance highlights include Merlefest, Grey Fox, The Berklee Performance Center, and Wide Open Bluegrass.
When recording their latest album “Yellow Line”, Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road dug deep into the writing and arranging facets of creativity. Purcell described the responsibility of carrying on a living tradition; “It was very important to me that I began this project the way I had learned from my heroes. Just us, telling stories in songs, building on the rich and diverse folk culture I had grown up in. However, I couldn’t simply leave it there. Everyone I’ve ever looked up to as an entertainer, Doc in particular, had never acknowledged boundaries between genre, style, origin, or influence. While I cared deeply about honoring the Appalachian Stringband music I loved, I also have my own songs inside, my own feelings to express, and my own innovations to contribute.”
Finishing his degree in String Performance, Purcell graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston in May of 2024, promptly hitting the road for over two months of heavy touring. Now living in Nashville, Liam maintains his Deep Gap roots, transporting listeners beyond the lights and curtains to a front porch in the mountains where the journey began.
Don’t miss what promises to be another special night of music and family-pleasing fun in the cozy confines of Randy’s Old Time Pickin’ Parlor. And be sure to bring your friends!
